The thyroid is small organ shaped as a butterfly located below the Adam's apple; it has an essential role in our well-being. The thyroid gland weighs 10 to 20 grams in normal American adults, slightly larger for males than females.

In the early days of AMHE, the vast majority of its members had completed their medical education in Haiti at the L’Hôpital de l’Université d’Etat d’Haïti (HUEH). In an effort to help their homeland, many of those physicians have been going back to volunteer at HUEH, teach residents and send much needed equipments.
