AMHE-New Jersey SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
In the early days of AMHE, the vast majority of its members had completed their medical education in Haiti at the L’Hôpital de l’Université d’Etat d’Haïti (HUEH). In an effort to help their homeland, many of those physicians have been going back to volunteer at HUEH, teach residents and send much needed equipments.
In 1997, the first ever annual congress of AMHE was organized in Haïti. To commemorate this milestone, 2 scholarship funds were created in the memory of 2 prominent members of AMHE: Dr Lionel Lainé and Dr Jean-Claude Rémy. The former was the first president of the Central Executive Committee of AMHE and the latter was an outstanding academician who taught at SUNY Downstate Medical School.
The Lionel Lainé fund was for students in Haiti willing to embark in the medical or dental field. On the other hand, the Jean-Claude Rémy fund was for students in the US of Haitian ancestry who want to study a health related field at either the undergraduate or the graduate level.
The criteria for obtaining the scholarship are straightforward:
- Student must have at least a B average.
- Demonstrate financial need.
- Pursuit of a degree in a health related field.
Several scholarships of up to $1000 each have been awarded yearly to proficient students either already matriculated in health care or with a serious aspiration for health care. Recipients have come far and wide in North America. There was a case of a student who left Haiti as a “boat people” and made it to medical school in Canada; there have been students from New York state. Lately, applicants have come mostly from the state New Jersey. There is no territorial limitation; geography is not a criterion to apply for the scholarship.
Many of our awardees have excelled. The article below presents two of our previous recipients who are certainly shining in their respective fields.
